Great Day Houston: Dorm Style

August is all about #backtoschool, and I got to share my tips to creating the perfect dorm on Great Day Houston yesterday!

I’m back in Boston after a very short trip to HOUSTON yesterday! I literally love Texas. Everyone is so nice there! It’s refreshing to be around people who are really kind and love their jobs.

I appeared on Great Day Houston for 2 segments on BTS style & dorm style. I’ve never done a dorm style segment before, so it was incredibly interesting to attempt to design a dorm…let’s just say, I think it came out OKAY! I had two assistants help me behind the scenes (thanks to Melissa & Alejandro) so I wasn’t totally on my own when putting together a dorm. It’s kind of exhausting though. Thankfully, I won’t be going to college anytime soon so I don’t have to worry about putting any dorm together, but I give major props to the girls who spend weeks designing their dorm!

I wore the cutest jumpsuit by Peter Jensen from Jet.com, and here’s where the rest of the items came from:

Jet.com supplied some of the school supplies you see in the dorm segment, and we have more awesome items from them in the upcoming style segment airing next week.

They have back to school essentials like notebooks, crayons + markers, pencil cases, backpacks and more that can be found on their site, Jet.com.

Art: Minted.com

USB Diffuser: Aura Cacia

Lotion + candle: Dani Naturals

JCPENNEY: Underwear + socks (now through August 15, for every pair bought, they are giving one pair to a child in NEED!)

The Container Store: wicker box + ottoman

Exotic Angle Houseplants supplied the awesome plants!

Watch the clip above, and I’ll be talking more #backtoschool style next week in D.C.!

Happy & Filter Free

Why living filter free will make you feel so much better about everything!

J.Crew top & sunglasses, Vintage denim

One of my favorite parts about showcasing life online is showing the “real” side of things. For example, I got this dress showcased a few days ago in the mail and got to try it on today, and I kind of hate it! It is wayyyy too small for me and doesn’t showcase the parts of my body I wish it did. I find that many people aren’t willing to showcase what their real life bodies look like, because they fear people are going to judge them or make comments. Most of the time- you’re the one judging yourself. It’s up to you to decide what makes you feel the best & most confident, and let that be shown through your personality and your style! When I was in high school, I spent so much time thinking about who was paying attention to what I wear wearing. Were people paying attention? Of course. Was it silly of me to care so much? OH, yea.

I’m gearing up for quite a busy month before I pack up and move to LA for three months! I’ll be in Houston, New York, upstate New York, Chicago, Long Island, & more! Sometimes I wish I was actually heading back to school instead of talking about back to school for an ENTIRE month!

P.S. I got some very exciting news last week that I am soooo excited to share…I can’t wait to be able to talk about it so soon!

Why I Won’t Go To Fashion Week Again

I’m not going to New York Fashion Week again, and here’s why.

I got myself invited to New York Fashion Week when I was 14 years old. I found a contact for BCBG/Herve Leger public relations and emailed her. I figured I’d never hear back, and was seriously in shock when I got my first ever invitation. And, they seated me FRONT ROW!

I had no clue what I was doing, and I honestly thought she was going to ask me to pay to go to the shows. I couldn’t figure out how people got invited to Fashion Week. In 2012, you had to be an editor, a celebrity, or someone seriously connected to go to Fashion Week. If you knew the names Whitney Port, Lauren Conrad, People’s Revolution, and Kelly Cutrone: you were probably going to Fashion Week. Once I got my first invite, I started emailing tons of other designers every season, asking if they’d have me cover the show on my blog.

When I first showed up at Fashion Week, I had no clue what to expect. The shows were held at Lincoln Center, which is in uptown Manhattan. Tons of people would flock to the shows in the dead of winter, taking pictures and trying to get themselves on the New York Times street style page. No one gave a s*** about being on an OOTD daily Instagram page: we all wanted to be in the Times! I was in awe. I loved the glam, the beauty, and honestly, how justifiably pretentious the atmosphere was. Going to NYFW at such a young age taught me so much about the type of people in the industry. You could easily spot the people like me, who were hungry and eager to be there, and you could spot the people who knew someone or just wanted to sit front row. Back in 2012, Instagram wasn’t nearly as big as it is today. You could almost sit through an entire fashion show without a text, tweet, or notification sound in your ear.

I’ve gone to Fashion Week in Manhattan for over 10 seasons now. I, along with the rest of the people who have been in this world for years, have seen it drastically change. As the industry got saturated, so did the parts of it that used to be so elegant and phenomenal. I’ve been learning a lot about the type of people I want in my life, and I’ve found that the people who now go to fashion week simply aren’t the type of people I want to surround myself with.

Along with tremendous stress, planning, exhaustion, and lack of nutritious food for an entire week, you battle a bunch of skinny b****** trying to act like they deserve to be pushing through to the front row when they probably snuck in.

I got to go to London Fashion Week a year ago, and was shocked to see how organic the setup is there. You have to be on the list, or you can’t get in. I’m allll for sneaking in places and doing crazy stuff, but when it comes to Fashion Week, there should be guest lists intact. There should be seating arrangements, and space for people to walk and breath. Until the London/Paris gets saturated (and I truly hope it never does) I will take every chance I can to travel their and view collections.

I gave away my tickets to NYFW last season, and it made my heart so happy to know that girls got to replace me who deserved it. They’re hungry for this world, and that’s how I was when I was younger.

P.S. My friend Chelsea wrote an article on why she isn’t going to Fashion Week any longer; read her take on it here.

Finding Your Tone This Summer

How are you finding your Tone this summer?

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #FindYourTone #CollectiveBias

Another disclaimer: that stain is coconut water! I get too tempted to buy every product in sight when I go into Walmart!

It’s rough staying clean and fresh during summer months. With the summer heat, and frequent rain storms, the weather can be really tough on your body. I find that my hair becomes an absolute mess during summer months, but one part I overlook is my skin. I never gave my skin enough attention in the summer because I thought I was wasting my time, but I recently found a product that’s totally changed my perspective on summer skin. Remember when you were younger and your parents would give you baby powder after a show, and it’d leave you feeling so clean and fresh? That’s how I feel when I use my new favorite body wash. The bottle fits perfectly with the aesthetic of my apartment, and if you’re looking for a quality product for less, you need this in your life.

I explore the Tone rainbow to use Tone® Soothing Care Body Wash to feel clean and fresh, and I use the Tone® Radiant Glow Body Wash to feel like a Brazilian Queen! Here’s my summer tutorial that showcases how I incorporate these two body wash scents into my daily regime.

Summer Staycation, at home!

  1. In the first image, you’ll see my applying my daily moisturizer to my skin. I usually only put moisturizer on my face, and that’s because I don’t find my skin needs more lotion when I use Tone® products.
  2. Step #2 is putting on some candles and a relaxing playlist. If you search “Alexa Curtis” on Spotify, you’ll see all of my playlists. Right now, I’m digging the Summer Party playlist. It’s important to feel relaxed and calm when you’re in the comfort of your own home.
  3. When it comes to deciding what Tone® scent to use, I usually let my mood decide. Sometimes, I need something more calm and relaxing. I’ll use the soothing body wash if I need a bit of a more “chill” night, and I use the radiant glow body wash if I’m going out, or having a movie night with my boyfriend! When shopping at Walmart, you’ll notice how many scents are actually available to you. It’s so cool to go shopping and have a huge selection of products right in front of you!
  4. After I apply the body wash, I like to exfoliate with a nice loofah (I have a handmade one that I use) because that makes sure you end up glowing for the rest of the week!

Boston Girl

I’m at the M.I.N.T. office today preparing to be interviewed for a movie on social media & mental health!

J.Crew pants & sunglasses, Nike sneakers

I’m very excited because I’m in Holliston, MA today at the M.I.N.T. office meeting with a team filming a movie about social media & mental health! We received an email a few months ago from the producer, and were so thrilled to be invited to be a part of this. I don’t have too much information about the movie or where it’s coming out, but I do believe that it’s for a film festival.

I spent this past weekend with one of my friends, Brenna, in Boston! She came to visit for the weekend after taking a day long spin certification class, and we talked all about our new projects (like our podcast) and lives. It took me a really long time to realize the type of people I want to have in my life, because as you get older, you realize that there isn’t enough time in the day for negativity. If someone only texts you when they need something, tell them to GTFO. If you find yourself not being able to have fulfilling, happy conversations with people around you, maybe explore some places where you might be able to connect with different people. Even if you’ve got someone in your life who you’ve got a negative gut feeling about- always follow your initial instinct.

I’ve got to go get ready for filming (eek!!!) but have a beautiful week, and remember you are so beautiful and worthy of the life you dream of.

Eating All Of Charleston

I definitely ate my weight in cupcakes, biscuits, and all things Southern in Charleston.

I’m one of those people who travels and reaches for everything in sight. If that means that I’m going to become cupcakes one day, I’m totally for it. You honestly only live once, and in my opinion, treating yourself should be a huge part of your life mission. I can’t say no to biscuits either. I think it may be because my mom is from Europe…but when I get around flaky biscuits with golden butter and cream- I’m like yessssss. If you’ve never been to London, tea and scones are a huge part of the culture, so I’ve got that buttery love in my blood.

I managed to get in a good sweat everyday in Charleston, which is always the toughest part of traveling. Finding a gym or even some weights can be a workout in itself. I still have so many days where I have a little voice in the back of my head that says “don’t eat that” if I haven’t worked out that day, but learning to love yourself is an uphill battle. When that voice comes in, I try and tell it to get the heck out of my head. If I can’t? That’s okay. Going to the gym is something that always makes me feel better anyway, so I don’t mind getting a workout in everyday. For those of you who have that little voice in your head that never leaves; I suggest talking it out a few times a month. Talk to a friend, a therapist, or even your parents about how you’re battling something deeper than you know, and one day, you’ll realize that those thoughts will disappear for good. You don’t deserve to think you HAVE to go to the gym to eat a cupcake or a burger.

Influencer Intro: Cam Fischer

The CEO of Vital Fit, Cam Fischer, is taking over the nutrition field in this city.

I never get to meet people in person. Occasionally, I’ll work with a brand or a person who I almost have to meet with, especially if we’re talking over a bigger deal. But for the most part, everything happens behind a screen. So when I was at the gym in Boston a few weeks ago, I picked up a cute item my gym sold and decided to email the founders to see if I could snag a few bottles to review. Instantly, one of the founders, Cam, emailed me back, and asked to meet a few days later with his business partner to tell me about his company!

Immediately after leaving our meeting, I knew that these power players were about to take over the fitness field. They’re the opposite of GNC, and even fresher and cooler than a Whole Foods. And, they only sell a few products too- and ones that seriously help athletes recover. Welcome, Cam!

A: What prompted you to you start your nutrition supplement company, Vital Fit?

C: We originally pitched VitalFit as the concept for our final thesis project. It’s funny, we were studying for a master’s degree in entrepreneurship, but somehow neither of us had any idea we’d be leaving with our own company. At the time, we wanted to build a network of mobile pop-up shops on college campuses and hire pre-med/nutrition students to customize safe supplement packages for students starting out at the gym. We thought back to a big problem we had freshman—going to places like GNC or The Vitamin Shop and listening to commissioned sales clerks (who didn’t know any better than we did), about what we should take. We’d work all day on the deliverables for class and then stay up all night brainstorming ways to make it even better. Between my passion for fitness and Alfred’s passions for creating meaningful business we knew we had a chance to do something great. A few weeks before graduation we looked at each other and said let’s run with it. A few months and a ton of on the ground research after that, our business evolved into what it is today—simple, clean, plant-based supplements for today’s studio workouts.

A: How does your product work?

C: Tart cherries have a super potent anti-inflammatory profile that’s easier for our bodies to process than something like turmeric and has way fewer side effects than something like ibuprofen—well actually no side effects. Within a few hours, phytonutrients reduce inflammation, attack free radicals, and block pain inducing enzymes (much like an ibuprofen does), helping your body recover naturally. Instead of using the whole cherry, we use just the skins, which is the most nutrient dense part. This means each capsule delivers a lot more antioxidants and a much greater anti-inflammatory effect per serving than other products on the market. The result is quick, all-natural recovery—perfect for any workout that incorporates high-intensity intervals, slow-controlled movements, and anything in between.

A: What’s your most popular product?

C: Right now, our tart cherry extract is our only product. We’re getting ready to release our second, a plant protein made from organic, cold-pressed pumpkin seeds, but we think it’s important to take our time deciding on what products we we’re going to make and of course how to best make them. Part of what takes so long is our design process, which is also what we think makes us unique—it’s one big collaboration. We hated the idea of making a product and pushing it with flashy marketing and flashier influencers. When it came to creating our own product line, the idea of collaborating with fitness instructors, and enthusiasts was a no brainer.  We thought, let’s invite the people who are going to use our products into the design process. That way we’ll be able to create products that people not only want but are comfortable using.

A: What’s the one thing you wish people knew about health supplements?

C: There’s ton of companies out there who sell generic ingredients that anyone can slap a label on and resell from there. More people are selling the same thing with a different label than you think and it’s important not to get sucked in by big claims and social media influencers on the pay roll.  There are too many flat tummy teas and too many promo codes to sell them—chances are the one you see today is the one you saw yesterday with a different label and person promoting it hasn’t tried it. With that said, there are great brands, selling great products, and finding people who really believe in the product to help spread the word. It’s important to spend a little extra time learning about products and the people behind them to find these brands—they have great things to offer. We think by doing this, we can make the health and wellness space more transparent than ever, from the ground up.

A: How can we eliminate dangerous social media trends such as “thinspo?”

C: We wish there was a straightforward answer to give—there’s certainly no easy fix. Hashtags like #thinspo can be misconstrued as a source of motivation, referencing a dream body or lifestyle. The trouble with this type of thinking is that most of these images are altered, and only very selective standards of beauty are praised. Everyone is starting from a different place, and health looks different on everyone. While we’re all about motivation and promoting a healthy lifestyle, we don’t subscribe to the notion that there is one version of beauty, fitness, or health.  When assessing a trend like this, it’s important to ask deeper questions and try to understand why these ideas become popular and work to promulgate messages of inclusion and holistic health.

A: What is your favorite part of your job? What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome thus far?

C: One of the biggest challenges has become one of our favorite parts of the job.  In the beginning, our biggest challenge was earning the trust of the people we wanted to work with—everyone had their guard up. We were just starting out, two kids’ fresh out of grad school with a lot of ideas and no track record to back them up. We understood why, we’d be skeptical too if we were business owners and two guys they’d never seen before said: “Hi, we’re starting a supplement company, want to do business with us?” That realization forced to us to leave our comfort zone, start meeting people, and begin building relationships throughout Boston’s health, wellness, and fitness scene—from the ground up. In just a few months we could see people, who were initially skeptical, let their guards down. It was incredibly rewarding to earn their trust and eventually the chance to earn their business. To this day, we love waking up, getting out, and seeing whose expectations we can reset.

A: How have social media and online advertising impacted your brand visibility?

C: When we started VitalFit, we said we were never wanted to fall into the mold of traditional social media marketing tactics—over-the-top advertisements and hired influencers. A big challenge has been learning to balance things that we know “work” while maintaining the authentic brand story we’re trying to tell. For the most part, we’ve kept our growth and brand awareness as organic as possible. We spend a lot of time meeting Boston’s fitness community in person and hosting events where we try to bring the community together to discuss things going on in the industry. Our approach on the ground has really helped us stay true to our social media values. By inviting instructors, who are local influencers, into our design process, we’ve in a lot of ways made them a part of our brand. The product we end up with is just as much theirs as it is ours. Now, instead of trying to convince or pay them to promote our product, they do it because they genuinely support us and believe in it. We could probably grow our visibility faster using traditional tactics, but we’re much happier sticking to our roots and growing our visibility sustainably and genuinely.

A: If you could give one piece of advice to young, aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?

C: If someone tells you no, keep going back until they say yes!

I NEVER WANT “VACATION” TO END!!

J.Crew top & shorts

I never want to leave vacation life. It’s the most relaxing thing in the world living on the water for a period of time. I feel weird using the word “vacation” because when I travel, I never actually take a vacation. I feel like a vacation would be an entire week with no cell phone, no pictures, and a whole lot of food. Luckily, I got to take a vacation when I was in Ibiza a few weeks ago, which was the closest to a vacation I’ll probably ever get! For this opportunity, I had a bunch of work to get done now that back to school season is approaching, so I was on my phone 24/7!

My best friends and I headed to Kiawah Island Golf Resort this week to get some true bonding time before two of us head off to Cali for a few months. I had heard such fantastic things about Charleston from a bunch of people, so when it came to deciding where to go, I knew this Southern city was going to be a charm. We ended up staying on a golf resort, and even though none of us golf, we got to bike, eat, swim, and hang at the beach all day. I have a few friends from the South, and it’s so funny to see how Southern people live because I’ve only ever been around my Southern friends in CT or NYC. I thought people would be eating more biscuits and working out much less- but it was the opposite! I’ve never been to such a fit city. Even Austin and Boston doesn’t compare to Charleston. Food wise- Charleston is still lacking on the health front of things. They’ve got a few rad juice bars with bangin’ acai bowls, but no amazing gluten-free bakeries or anything yet. It takes a decent 10 minutes here to get a coffee. Southern living = slowwwwww livinggggggg.

Have you been to Charleston? Where did you end up when you visited? I stayed on the golf island for the first three days, before transferring to a downtown Charleston hotel for our last night. I definitely liked being in a remote area for the first portion of our trip because Charleston didn’t have too many options for adventures during the day.

I’m at the airport now taking a flight back to Boston before heading to NYC for the day tomorrow! I’ll be putting up a new #SexEdforTeens video next week because I didn’t have time to film anything this week. In the meantime, watch my most recent vid here!

Why It’s Okay Not To Be Okay

A guest post from one of my writers, Elizabeth Brennan, on a topic we all need to know more about.

Note from Alexa:

One of my writers, Elizabeth, wrote this post and sent it to me. It’s a topic that I feel most people aren’t comfortable talking about, and I want people to know that it’s OKAY to not be okay. There are so many times in your life where you will feel like things are so damn good. Maybe you just got a job out of college, or a boyfriend/girlfriend, or an incredibly beautiful pair of shoes, and life is just hella good. When something goes wrong, it will feel like life goes from 100-0 real quick, and it does. And that’s why life is so exciting and confusing at the same time: the world is constantly trying to teach you something, and it’s up to you to accept what is and always get back up and move on.

It’s a huge misconception that in order to be perceived as successful or “having it together”, we are required to be physically, mentally, and emotionally sound 100% percent of the time. Some of the greatest minds in the world were not “okay.” Think of Van Gogh, who sliced off his own ear, or Virginia Woolf, who was institutionalized after suffering a mental breakdown, or even Demi Lovato, who learned she had bipolar disorder after a brief stint in a rehab facility. I notice this trend everyday; people pretend that they’re alright, when in reality they may be falling apart inside, in order to preserve their reputation or avoid seeming weak.

I bought into this warped mentality for years, until I realized a few things. Firstly, everyone, even those you might consider “perfect” have bad days, bad weeks, and sometimes bad months. Secondly, showing emotion is not something to be ashamed of. By learning to open up to my family and my closest friends, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, and even learned that others were struggling with the same problems I had. Finally, those to whom I’ve turned will, in time, need me to serve as their support system, too. So, consider this your formal invitation to reach out, and to lean on others for help. Just remember that it’s okay not to be okay today… there’s always tomorrow!

It’s okay not to be okay all the time, but if you experience prolonged periods of depression or have suicidal thoughts, please seek professional help. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 1-800-273-8255.

Back to School Safety

Here’s what your teen + you should know before heading back to school.

As many young adults head back to school, and straight to college, I wanted to talk a bit about back to school hacks and tips that are important to remember when navigating through this time!

I talked with TODAY last year about helicopter parenting, and that’s what I want to start this post off with. If you’re not familiar with helicopter parenting, it means that you’re a little too involved with social media. Parents: being on social media is a great thing. If you’re follow your kids, that’s also great! By following your child on social media, you have created an open and healthy environment for them to talk to you about virtually anything. A teen allowing a parent to follow them on social media shows that they probably don’t have anything to hide. Take this opportunity to tag your teen in posts you see that they might find inspiring, or even on celebrity pictures of content they should be looking at! It helps to not directly comment on their content, but on others so that they don’t begin to feel sheltered. Yes, they may have a finsta (fake Instagram) but that is their business, not yours.

If you watch the video above, you’ll see how helicopter parenting can negatively affect a young mind. What can you do to avoid helicopter parenting? Unless you are seeing a sudden personality change in your child, or see them begin to get very uncomfortable when you start talking to them about social media; there is nothing to worry about. Teens express who they are via social media, and standing by them instead of against them can be really soothing for a teen to know.

The High School to College Transition

No, I didn’t go to college. But while I was finishing up high school online, I was college bound. I was all ready to pack up my items and move into a dorm to begin the next chapter of my life. It was a very scary feeling, and even scarier when I decided to skip college and move to Manhattan. You can read about that story here.

This is a crucial period for a young adult, and along with having to make major life decisions (jobs, relationships, moving out) they are also really finding who they are right now. Parents should know that a young adult might get depressed, anxious, or act a little “out of character” during this time period. For most people, it’s a phase. Accept that they are allowed to be stressed, happy or angry, and then will move on. Be involved by helping find a suitable dorm or apartment, helping them decorate, and assisting them financially by coming up with a financial plan. If you’re helping them pay for college, that’s great! If you aren’t, it’s just as beneficial to come up with a rough plan on how they are going to pay for the rest of college, their dorm, expenses and more. If they call you freaking out in the middle of the night, calm them down, and then suggest some therapy resources for them over the next few days. Many colleges & high schools have free therapy boards and resources.

Online Safety

Most kids don’t listen to half of the content that is taught in health class. That’s one of the main reasons I started #SexEdForTeens! For young children, parents should be very involved with their social media use. It’s important to create an open and honest environment from a young age; which means teaching your child about some of the content they might see on the web (especially how they shouldn’t compare their bodies to celebrity bodies), and how to avoid many online sites where they might meet people that aren’t “good” people. Online stalking is totally real. If you find it necessary, block certain sites like Facebook and Twitter off of their computer/iPad/cell phone until they get older. Or, leave the sites open to them but advise them to spend their time on sites like National Geographic, Instagram, or Discovery Channel!

My best piece of advice is to avoid helicopter parenting at all costs. Don’t be afraid to tell your teen what you like/dislike about how they act on the Internet, but understand they might not listen to you. That’s totally OKAY! You are going to do the best you can to be a fantastic parent, and they are going to do the best they can to navigate being a teen.

P.S. I’m having an event August 11th in Boston! Want to come? I’ll send you an invite if you apply here!
