Coming Up on Founder Files, My New Show

Earlier this year I had the idea to interview 5 Los Angeles based founders in a raw and unfiltered camera interview, different than my weekly podcast. I embarked on the journey to choose 5 people who embody not only fearlessness but honesty when it comes to discussing their entrepreneur journey.

The reason I wanted to create this series is because I wanted to bring light to how people get successful. There is so much more that goes into running a company than people see, and social media might make it look like 24/7 fun because you’re not seeing what happens when the camera turns off.

You don’t have to become an entrepreneur to be successful OR happy.

Episode 1 with Chandler Chang, the founder of Therapy Lab, airs next Monday!

#FearlessFridays: Your Mental Health Doesn’t Define You

When I was in Indiana a few weeks ago I was invited by an incredible nonprofit called Remedy Live to appear on their podcast, Wired. @remedylive pairs young people with therapists (for free) to talk to 24/7 by texting REMEDY to the number 494949. My struggle with mental health started when I was 16. I had an eating disorder that inspired me to write a post called Runway Model or Role Model that went viral. I received an email following from @talkspace asking if they could fly me to NY to speak on a panel on social media and mental health. It wasn’t until girls and their moms from my high school started messaging me asking how they could overcome their eating disorders that I knew I was not into fashion anymore- I wanted to use my voice to make a change surrounding mental health, but also living life unfiltered. Growing up, I never had anyone to talk to when I was feeling depressed or anxious, and when I dropped out of high school I felt more alone than ever. Blogging became my livelihood but also my lifeline. I say during this interview that something is always going to happen in your life, whether that’s trauma like it was for me during what happened in my childhood or you suffer with anxiety/depression…but you determine the path you go down. You have two paths in life. Pick the right one. You will be OKAY. It’s been over a decade since I started blogging when I was 12, and I’m a different (finally confident!) person now. It takes time to find yourself.

P.S. I was dealing with literally 4 weeks of laryngitis during this interview, aka why my voice is so out of wackkkk!

#WCW: Candace Nelson, Sprinkles Cupcakes

I’m a sugar fanatic. I’d eat gluten-free Sprinkles red velvet cupcakes (or Magnolia’s) 24/7 if I could. I try and limit dessert to the weekends which never works, so you can probably find me at the Sprinkles ATM in Beverly Hills with my best friend Alix on any given weeknight. Recently I had the chance to try Pizzana, a pizza spot that has hit LA with raving reviews with my other best friend, Daniella. I walked away understanding the rave. The brains behind both Sprinkles & Pizzana is former investment banker Candace Nelson. She also hosts a show on Netflix called “Sugar Rush” because she’s obviously not busy enough!  Thanks for chatting with me and inspiring my sweet tooth, Candace!

Candace Nelson

A: How did you come up with the name Sprinkles?

C: It just came to me! “Sprinkles” evokes joy and playfulness.  And it’s memorable.

A: Is there a specific flavor that is your absolute favorite? How did that flavor become a cupcake?

C: I like simplicity done well. As a result, Sprinkles flavors are mostly classic flavors. My favorites are the dark chocolate and banana. If banana sounds like an odd choice, then I urge you to give Sprinkles banana cupcake a try! It’s something special!

A: What more do you hope to accomplish with Sprinkles? You are already at the top!

C: We are continuing to expand our Sprinkles Cupcakes ATMs in various markets. Look for them in airports and other on-to-go locations!
A: What made you transition from Cupcakes to Pizza with Pizzana? Which I also recently tried with my friend Daniella, and fell in love with.

C: I love elevating foods. When I tried Daniele Uditi’s pizza for the first time, I just knew we could make something special together. Fast forward to several years later, we have two locations and are growing fast!

A:  Being a judge on Netflix Shows such as “Cupcake Wars” and “Sugar Rush”, what do you look for in a contestant and their baking?

C: I love to be surprised! Surprise me with bold flavors, interesting textures and imaginative design!

A: You were a former investment banker before you started Sprinkles. What advice would you give entrepreneurs who are looking to raise capital for their company?

C: If you can start small and use cash flow to grow while keeping control of your business, that is the ideal – not raising money. That said, if you have to raise money, go out to friends and family first because they are the people closest to you who believe in you and your idea.

101: Avril Graham, Fashion & Beauty at Harper’s Bazaar

Growing up in a small town in Scotland is what Avril Graham attributes some of her success to. There were no silver spoons near Avril when she started. Now she is the Executive Fashion & Beauty Editor at Harper’s Bazaar US, where she handles most media coverage and fashion. She’s also helps make decisions regarding one of fashion’s biggest parties, Harper’s Bazaar Icons.

Collaborate…Coffee…But I’m Really Freakin’ Busy?

I hear the term collaborate every hour. I get messages all of the time about what I think about brands who email you guys asking to “collaborate” or send you product. I’ve addressed this on videos and social posts but I do think it’s a solid conversation to keep having. Back in 2011 when I started blogging I used the word collaborate all of the time. Instagram wasn’t as common then because the term influencer hadn’t even come out, so we were all using the term collaborate.

Here is the textbook definition of the word collaborate: work jointly on an activity, especially to produce or create something.

There’s a blurry line with the word collaborate and trying to get product for free, get a service for free, or ask someone who you are inspired by to help you/ meet up with you for something.

Since many people are attempting to make blogging/Instagram into a career, the word is used freely now. Which is totally cool- but there’s a difference between cold pitching yourself to a brand to get something and sending a pitch to someone you aspire to be like to meet for coffee.

WATCH THIS VIDEO!

To be transparant, I and every executive/ CEO you follow are too busy to meet you for a cup of coffee. It’s much easier for me to reply to an email or a thoughtful DM or meet you in public/ at a summit than it is for me to meet you for coffee if you’re a stranger. No one necessarily just wants to meet with someone who they don’t know to give their advice to. Safety people, safety 🙂

The better thing to do is watch the videos I’ve put online, listen to my podcast episode on how to write a cold pitch…and stop asking to meet someone for coffee without nurturing a relationship prior. If you’re looking to collaborate with a brand, totally ask for free product in return for a post but think about what sets YOU apart from everyone who also wants that free lip gloss or drone before you write an email. Write a few emails and see who replies, test a few different pitches and figure it out along the way!

If you are emailed by a brand who wants to give you product, say yes if you like the stuff! Say no if they ask you to buy the product to then feature the stuff. I’ve been asked how to reply to an email like that and my advice is don’t reply at all or counter their email by saying that they can pay you for the post because you’re not buying a product to then write a post on it. That’s not a collaboration, that’s a sale. It’s offensive actually to be asked to purchase a product for a discount to review. Doesn’t that sound stupid?

I’m happy to chat with someone on the phone briefly or on Skype who has questions and we have corresponded over a period of time. I’ve now had the chance to get to know you and understand what you’re trying to build (or if you’re confused altogether, that’s totally cool too!) but don’t waste your time asking for coffee. You can get way more via email by knowing what you want.

I HOPE THIS HELPS!

My Millenial Gift Guide with CHEDDAR

My segment with CHEDDAR aired yesterday and I discussed 5 products that are perfect for gifting to the young adult in your life. Watch the segment above and forward to minute 30 to see me!

In order of the products discussed:

Beautycounter makeup

I love beautycounter because their makeup is organic and clean. If you’re just starting to experiment with wearing makeup or the girl in your family is, gifting makeup from beautycounter is an Alexa approved idea. I love their messaging and I think that the brand is in general way better than some of the crappy products you find at Sephora and Ulta.

Vera Bradley backpack

If you follow me on Instagram you know that I’m a backpack addict. I don’t think you can ever be too old or too young to wear a backpack, unless you’re on your way to breaking your back like I am with the amount of stuff I put in my backpack! This mini bag is $40 and comes in a variety of patterns and colors, plus it’s convertible so you can wear it across your waist or as a backpack. If you’re looking for something to carry your cell phone and wallet when you’re going out, this bag is it!

Fairytale Brownies

I have been working with Fairytale Brownies for most of this year on different segments and posts because what they offer is fabulous for not only corporate gifting but family and friends too. I’ve sent a bunch of their brownie gift sets out to business colleagues I’ve worked with this year, along with some friends. You can buy a smaller box with brownies and cookies or go bigger and send a box with a variety of both.

Pironii candles

One of my friends from WeWork in LA started this candle company. Not only do I love him, I love what his candles are about. I’ve bought them for friends and family over the past year, and also continue to buy them for myself to keep in my apartment. The boxes and smell is enough to make you want to switch out your overpriced candles to all Pironii ones- trust me!

Warmies slippers

My parents surprised me with a mini birthday party over the weekend when I got to Connecticut and my mom bought me something from Warmies, not realizing that they sponsor me! Oprah listed Warmies slippers in her 2019 gift guide which means they’re worthy of you and I if Oprah says so. Microwave them for extra heated comfort during the winter!

P.S. I’m giving away all 5 of these products plus something else on Instagram for the next 24 hours. Good luck!

Take A Step Back & Relax!

The holidays can be stressful for many. I was quoted in a Redbook interview a few weeks ago about how I de-stress: which usually means taking a few days off, reading and meditating. When it’s summit season like it is right now for me I struggle with taking time off, but I don’t work on the holiday and consciously decide to work a few hours a day if I need to.

Here’s a few other ways you can de-stress during the holidays…

1. Writing

Writing down your thoughts can be a great way to put your day into perspective, according to Entrepreneur’s quick and easy de-stressing guide. Start by writing about what’s been bothering you, and let your words flow freely on the page. It helps to write about things that you can’t say out loud because bottling up your emotions often leads to pent-up stress. For a quick mental boost, try writing down at least one thing you’re grateful for and one goal you’ve achieved — no matter how small it may seem. As a bonus, you can look back on your previous entries and maybe come to realize that you made it through all those “bad” days.

2. Meditating

If you haven’t already tried meditation, we suggest trying out several meditation apps like Headspace and Calm that can help you build a daily de-stressing habit. Consistency is key when it comes to this method. Taking a few minutes every morning to breathe, clear your mind, and focus your energy can make a massive difference in your daily outlook. With some practice, you’ll be able to approach your usual struggles with an inner, unshakeable calm.

3. Get outside!

When’s the last time you’ve truly appreciated nature? Earthing involves going outdoors and experiencing the peace and serenity that comes with being surrounded by trees or by bodies of water. Statistics published by Parsley Health show that your stress levels will drop by up to 20% just by being surrounded by nature, and exercise doesn’t necessarily even have to be involved. Just touching, smelling, and just experiencing the sounds and sights of nature can be enough to elevate your mood. If you live in the city, finding pockets of nature can be difficult. However, even making a small change like eating your lunch outside can have a positive impact.

4. Coloring

To nurture your inner artist, Good Housekeeping suggests a selection of adult coloring books to help you relax. They claim that these books have a huge range of benefits, from decreasing stress to improving focus. Unlike taking on a full-blown art project, coloring books are portable and easy to set up and put away. Plus, their trendy nature means that there are enough categories to suit everyone’s niche interests: “Whether you’re a fan of Disney, animals, tattoo art, or flowers, there’s a coloring book for you.” All you need to get started after making your agonizing decision are a few coloring materials and you’re good to go!

5. Baking

Chances are that all that stress has made you hungry. We’ve got the perfect solution for you: baking. Whether it’s classic chocolate chip cookies or carrot cake, baking is sure to distract you from your source of stress and give you a delicious treat to munch on. In CNET’s guide to holiday de-stressing, they claim that “baking offers a productive and creative way to get your mind off of holiday stress, so whip up a batch of goodies to share with friends and family (or to eat yourself, we’re not judging you).”

Now that you’re finally home and away from all your stressors you can finally begin to relax and unwind. Which de-stressing method are you going to try first?

EPISODE 100 OF TILU!

Officially 100 EPISODES OF my podcast This is Life Unfiltered! I can’t believe I made it 100 weeks into this show. I’ve met so many incredible people along the way and hopefully have continued to inspire you in your journey to being fearless… Through this podcast I landed my own show on Radio Disney and hopefully a new show in 2020. Not only has my career done well, I’ve had the opportunity to lead the discussion about empowerment and getting out of your comfort zone with founders across the world. I’ve made new friends, lost a few along the way! and published 90 + interviews with people who have changed my life and hopefully yours for the better.

I sat down with the star of Netflix’s Tall Girl Ava Michelle to talk about being fearless and how she landed her first big role. At 17, Ava is a triple threat. My assistant’s mom told us to look into Ava, and we were able to get her on the podcast pretty quickly and I held on to the episode to wait for episode 100!

Thank you for continuing to follow me and believe in what I’m building. I can’t wait to see where the next 100 episodes leads us!

Alexa’s Guide to Fort Wayne in Partnership with Visit Fort Wayne

I had the opportunity to spend a few days in Fort Wayne, Indiana 2 weeks ago in partnership with Visit Fort Wayne. It’s not a city that I ever anticipated going to because I never thought of Indiana as a “hotspot” per say, but if you know me you know that I love visiting places that are off the regular path. There’s nothing cooler than going to somewhere and being the person to convert other people to going there!

Visit Fort Wayne gave me a 2-day itinerary stocked with coffee shops, stores and restaurants to check out. I was in town to surprise a fan so I didn’t have much time between the shoot and prepping for it to explore, but I managed to get to many of the places on the guide that they suggested. Below are a few of my suggestions if you’re planning a trip to Fort Wayne:

Coffee + Sweets:

Fortezza Coffee and DeBrand’s Chocolate

One of the popular coffee shops in Fort Wayne is Fortezza. It’s located in the heart of the city (we stayed at the Courtyard) which is in walking distance to many other restaurants and stores. I didn’t love the pastries but I did enjoy the coffee: I got an oat milk latte 2 days in a row, and probably should’ve opted for the salted brownie instead of the lemon muffin I got. Note to self: stop going to coffee shops after 4 PM!

DeBrand’s chocolate was AMAZING. Everyone I talked to in town told me to go to DeBrands, so we ended up going twice. The first time we went was after the NBC segment with Sammie, and we got tons of samples and a few truffles. I’m a chocolate addict, so I know incredible chocolate when I try it. Then Alexis and I went on a tour of DeBrand’s the following day after I filmed a podcast. I’d suggest you go directly to the store downtown and get all of the chocolates to go while exploring the city. You’ll enjoy it more because the chocolate is super rich.

Shopping:

The Find (downtown)

A few blocks from our hotel was a store called The Find, which housed every unique and fun brand or item you could imagine. I was exhausted when I decided to go into the store so I didn’t leave with anything, but I’d totally go back there for holiday gifting or just to shop in general. Brands like Velvet and Ronny Kobo mixed with artsy candles and jewels were totally up my alley.

Dinner:

Copper Spoon (downtown)

After landing in Fort Wayne and calling a ride to our hotel, our driver told us his favorite places in town. One that he suggested was the Copper Spoon. We made reservations to eat there the following night, and arrived around 7:00 PM. Alexis and I hadn’t eaten all day, so we ordered just about everything on the menu. I wanted to try the chicken and mushrooms which were both delicious. The vibe of the place was equally as fun as the food. Wine bottles were hung on the walls and the dim lighting made it a really intimate atmosphere. I’d bring friends there or go for a business dinner.

If you’re not looking to eat as much as I do when I travel, check out the murals in downtown. Right around Fortezza and The Find are about 10 beautiful murals. They’re perfect for taking pictures of or in front of. Make sure to bundle up because it’s FREEZING!

Thank you Visit Fort Wayne and all of the places above for letting us come and explore your quaint city!

An Unexpected Uber Ride/ My Advice

I had to write a blog post about this experience because I know it’s an important topic to cover. I posted this on my Instagram story yesterday and got a ton of messages which is why I’m addressing it here.

Yesterday I was in LA at my apartment heading to the airport. I called an Uber at around 9:45 AM, and a white BMW UberX was outside of my apartment. I had a suitcase and two bags that I couldn’t carry at once, so I put my suitcase in the back of the car. I was in a rush to make my flight, and my gut said not to get into the car but I was in a rush and have a TV segment in NY today. I put my suitcase in the car, went back in my apartment to get the other two bags. I put those in the car, closed the door to walk to the other side and the driver sped off with all of my stuff within 1 second. I was in total shock and had no clue what to do. That was all of my luggage but also my laptop and camera, etc. I kept my purse on me so there was no purse in the car.

I instantly sprinted up my block screaming and looking for anyone to help me. This guy walked out of his store and I told him what happened- we called 911 together, and at this point the driver was driving up into the valley. He ended the trip about 10 minutes from where I live and sent me a message saying he “thought I was in the car” which is a complete lie. There was no easy way for me to contact Uber support or a major help line which is why my first instinct was to call 911.

After about 30 – 40 minutes, the driver left all of the stuff on the curb and was waiting in his car. The guy who helped me walked over to him and came back to me saying that he was seriously glad I didn’t get in the car because the driver was very unfit to drive. Who knows what would’ve happened if I got in that car?

I’m putting this story out there as a PSA to parents & young people who follow me. Trust your gut. I knew not to get in the car, but I was in a rush. This goes further than simply checking a license plate to make sure you’re getting in an actual Uber- this shows that Uber does not car about their riders. They sent me a $3 credit after the ride and over 2 hours of me on the phone with them trying to tell them to get this driver off of the app. I’ve since deleted Uber and will never use it again.

If you are a parent, I would love to see you all with some type of phone that can track where your child is. Find My iPhone is a great addition to an iPhone, but Androids also have options for this. Teens- your parents are not tracking your day to day movement, but don’t be afraid of letting them know where you are. Safety is COOL!
