The Test of Time

Wearing the Be Fearless stickers, available for purchase here

Last week I hosted an Instagram live Q&A where a bunch of you asked me questions on everything from when I want to get married to how I deal with times being slower. I think the second question is a really solid question worth addressing. Many of you have noticed that I’m not working on the show I had for the last year any more (that’s what happens in entertainment, things end when they are meant to!) and that ending in August threw me into this new chapter of my life. I had been so comfortable going into an office for the first time IN MY LIFE! that I forgot about what my end goal was. Instead of focusing as much on what was coming next like I usually do, I got into a pattern and forgot about the next step. And then it ended, and I all of a sudden didn’t have to go into this office any more or attend weekly meetings etc. besides the rest of the work I have with my company. It’s been an adjustment for me because there are days when I wake up and I have 2 phone calls or one meeting and nothing else before or after that. Now that it’s October things have picked back up again, but as an entrepreneur there will be many times when things are slow and you just have to shut up and deal with it. If you write 100 emails on Monday and you wake up Tuesday with no more people to email or follow-ups to have, go for a run, buy a new book or write your own book!

There’s always something to do and now you can let your imagination run free a bit until the next big opportunity comes your way (and IT WILL!)

Episode 91// Sharon Robinson

I had the pleasure of talking with Sharon Robinson, daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson for episode 91 of This is Life Unfiltered. Sharon is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction. She has also written several widely praised nonfiction books about her father, including Jackie’s Nine, Jackie Robinson’s Values to Live By, and Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America. Not only is she an author, she’s also an incredible inspiration to people across the globe. Her groundbreaking charity work enables kids across the country to go to college and have the opportunity to utilize playing sports and writing, some who may not have had the chance to do so prior.
I highly suggest you listen to this episode and apply to be a part of her program, where you’ll have an opportunity to meet her and get in to your dream college!

Choosing Your First Credit Card

I remember getting my first credit card and it was a very exciting day for me. I believe I was 16, and I remember finally feeling like a real adult! There’s nothing better than financial independence.

It’s a noble goal to want to have your own money and no longer feel like you have to take money from your family. Having a stable job (even if it’s at a coffee shop or a clothing store) is a mature step to take as you get older. This doesn’t come with some anxiety attached to the excitement. Taking care of your personal finances is only going to get harder as you get older. But, one of the best things to do if you’re over the age of 16 is to get your first credit card. I’m here to help you decide which credit card is right for you!

The first thing you will see changing a lot from card to card is APR: Annual Percentage Rate. This is a fee you will be charged at the end of every month. You can also find your daily APR by dividing it by 365. For example, let’s look at the Capital One Secured MasterCard, an OK starter card. This card has an APR of 26.99%. High, but at least it doesn’t fluctuate much. The daily APR would be.073. After each purchase $.73 cents will be added as interest. At the end of the month you will need to pay $22 of interest.

Now that you know about APR let’s talk about the different types of credit cards you can apply for. Seeing as this is your first credit card you will want one that doesn’t have fluctuating APR, doesn’t have an annual fee, and doesn’t require a high credit score. I made the mistake by getting three credit cards when I was 18. Being a young entrepreneur is not easy. I always need money because otherwise I won’t be able to afford my expenses or pay people that work for me. Because of that, I jumped at getting the first three cards I got approved for for when in reality they had the highest interest and I made a super dumb choice. The type of card that accommodates not doing what I did is a secured card. A secured card means you put down a cash deposit of between $200-$300. This helps in case anything goes wrong and you are late for a payment. But if nothing goes wrong, you get your money back. It also limits the amount you spend so that you only have the amount of money you want to spend available each month.

Things like life insurance and pensions become more important and can be hard to handle. A PHP agency reviews these products for recommendation. But, one of the best things to do if you’re over the age of 16 is to get your first credit card. I’m here to help you decide which credit card is right for you!

A good card to start with is the CitiBank Secured MasterCard. It has an APR of 24.49%, which means that you will be paying an extra $20 at the end of each month. However, you can avoid interest if you ever need to take out a loan for some reason. With a Citiflex loan you can set up a monthly payment plan to pay off the loan in place of paying your interest. Depending on your situation this could be extremely beneficial.

Next on my list of good starter cards is the Bank of America Secured Credit card. It has a $300 deposit and APR of 24.99%. This APR adds up to a total of $21 of interest per month.

The Discover Secured Credit Card also offer an APR of 24.99%, yet it comes with more benefits than the Bank of America Secured Credit Card. You earn 1% cash back on all purchases and 2% in restaurants and gas stations.  At the end of every 3 months you can earn 2% of what you spent back which you can use for a nice night out!

Students, you are in the unique position of qualifying for a student credit card. This means you can get specialty cards at an excellent deal. For example, the Bank Of America Travel Rewards Credit Card is a great option. It has a fluctuating APR of 16.99% to 24.99%. However, it does have a 0% APR for the first 12 billing cycles. If you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days you will earn a $250 statement which can be used for travel related purchases. That $250 is a plane ticket to a great vacation.

These are some of the deals and cards I would suggest you look at when starting to build your credit. No annual fees, a card that doesn’t require a high credit score to open, a fixed APR and one with possible deals are solid words to look out for. In order to succeed in business and life you need to have a reliable credit score so it’s never too early to start building it up!

Drafting the Cold Email

Emails are often the first step for any career path you wish to embark on. I know how intimidating writing an email can be. It’s even harder when you don’t know the person so you’re email a cold pitch. A cold email is an email you will write directly to your dream boss. How you go about getting your dream boss’ email is entirely up to you. You may download the plugin Snovio.co to get every email you ever want from a website for free. It’s a game changing plugin!

This is a topic I’m frequently asked about because I’ve really made a living off of writing cold emails. Now, I may write 1,000 pitches and 1 replies and that could turn into something but it could easily not turn in to anything. I don’t think of any email or introduction as a waste of time. You will eventually get that one yes like I did for my Radio Disney show Fearless Everyday. There is nothing to be scared of. Half the time you won’t get a reply from someone because they never received your email!

A million different things will run through your head when it comes to writing a cold pitch.

Is this to formal, is it not formal enough, do I sound mean, does it make sense?

The chances of you getting a response are slim at best. I don’t mean to disappoint you but it’s important that you don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. There is no harm in emailing multiple people or executives whom you may want to work for. But you shouldn’t email 10 execs on the same team at one company. That looks more impersonal.

The first thing you need to do is have a strong subject line. You want to make your intentions clear. If the person you are writing may need an assistant, your subject line should be ASSISTANT_NAME. With this subject line, they think you are an assistant and/or are looking for work. It’s a good way to maybe get your email opened. Second, you need to introduce yourself. In one or two sentences give them your name, recent history, and your reason for emailing. Now, show them you are a fan of their work by complementing something obscure or small they did in their past. You don’t have to write a 10,000 word essay here. I love reading through pitches but when I get so many for my podcast, I really respect when a pitch is a few sentences and to the point.

People are more likely to respond to genuine fans rather than people who don’t take the time to look up who they are emailing. Finally, let them know you are entering the same field as they are and would appreciate if they could give you any tips or leads on possible job opportunities.

Here is an example of a cold email Paco on my team sent out to a TV writer.

Dear TV Writer

My name is Paolo. I am a recent college graduate who has just moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in animation. As a child you sparked my love for cartoons with shows such as, Power Puff Girls and Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends. In college I discovered your short form series: No Neck Joe. Throughout all of your projects I have come to notice, and admire, your ability to respect your older audiences while maintaining a tone acceptable for young children. Your ability to strike a balance between adult themes and childish presentation inspired me to reach out to you, and come to LA.

I am looking for a job as a writers assistant or PA for an animated series to begin my career in the animation industry. If you, or anyone else you know, is in need of an assistant I am hardworking and willing to start as soon as possible.

Thank you,

I know that writing emails is hard and not getting a response can really weigh a person down. Stay strong and keep believing in yourself. Today is your day! The top of your mountain is waiting…so get on your computer and type away!

Stylish Watches with Citizen

To say I’m obsessed with watches would be an understatement. Ever since I was a little girl I always admired watches. Maybe it’s because I always thought really rich people wore them or something like that but let’s just say that my obsession only became stronger as I got older. I remember my first Swatch watch, and then my sister worked at Michael Kors a million years ago and got me a gold metal watch that I’ve worn ever since. The thing about watches that’s different than any other accessory is they grow with you. I knew it was time to retire my timeless MK watch so I approached one of the best watch brands out there, Citizen. Not only does the entire team rule, but they have such strong morals and a range of watches that fit into any budget. You may remember last year when they flew me to Orlando to experience their successful partnership with Disney, which was a blast!

“Earlier this year Citizen Watch announced American model and actress, Angela Lindvall, as the face of their new ladies’ campaign promoting the brand’s new Capella collection. Lindvall, known for her accomplished fashion career, shares the same appreciation and passion for environmental sustainability, personal growth and overall wellness as Citizen.”

Citizen doesn’t just provide watches. They team up with major organizations and companies like Disney and Get a Light, Give a Light to give back to the community with every watch purchased. It’s incredibly important to me to make sure that I not only inspire you all to do good in the world, but to also align and purchase from brands who do. Which watch is your favorite from the ones above!?

WHAT TO ASK YOUR MENTOR!

So you meet that one person who is your ideal mentor. Savvy, funny and incredibly successful. You sent an email introducing yourself and thanking that person for speaking with you after (insert any event/ place you met this one shining star) but now what? You are super excited and ready to pick their brain, for any and all information they have to offer. You have everything ready but you don’t know what questions you should be asking. Here are 5 questions you should ask your mentor or industry insider while out for coffee.

One question to start off the convo with is

“what were your first 5 years like when you started out at the company you’re at the top of now?”

Everyone has a different first 5 years but hearing their stories will help you structure a path to success.

Don’t be afraid to ask about your resume and cover letter. Even better, bring your cover letter and resume as a print out so that you can take a few moments during the interview to discuss what could be better on it. It is your first impression in paper form after all! They will tell you what they like to see and what they don’t like to see. That is information that not everyone has and it’s one simple edit closer to the success you want- plus, you look engaged and ready to land your dream job without having to say you are.

Ask your mentor about their strongest and weakest interviews. The stories they give can be invaluable. You will hear about their mistakes and triumphs in one of the most crucial areas of job hunting. Their stories could possibly illuminate mistakes you have made in the past, highlight things you do well, and keep you from repeating the mistakes of others.

If you are struggling with any personal mental health issues, you can ask your new mentor if they too have struggled with any. I often find comfort in knowing someone I admire has also struggled with many of what I’ve endured in my personal life.

The last question you should ask is if they know anyone searching for an assistant or need a position filled. This question might not amount to anything BUT it could lead to job.  Be sure to save this topic for the end of the conversation. If you ask it any earlier you risk looking like you are only meeting this person to get a job. More often than not your mentor is already going to be prepared to answer this question since you aren’t meeting with them to talk about what they’re having for dinner! Everyone likes to feel appreciated so be sure to ask lots of questions and develop a connection.

My final word of advice is to remember you can say no. If you are meeting with a mentor that means your career is only just starting. Just because you’re sitting with a powerful person doesn’t mean you have to jump and immediately say YES! You may even find yourself leaving your introductory meeting realizing that this mentor is not the person for you. This is your career and your reputation. You have final say on what you do or do not do.

In conclusion, have fun with it. You are out to coffee with your mentor or insider, this is something not many people get to do. It’s a privilege you have earned and should be proud of. You are on your way to a fearless future now!

Q&A with Me in Nyota Magazine!

Earlier this year I was approached by a magazine called NYOTA about whether I’d be willing to sit down with them for an interview on my journey as a young entrepreneur so far. I’ve read NYOTA before and I love how the magazine has a heavy emphasis on young adults and talent which isn’t always chronicled often enough. You can read the full Q&A with me here!

A Day in My Life: 9/17/2019

The word entrepreneur is glamorized in society today. As much fun as taking incredible meetings is along with driving across LA (Hollywood!) to pitch those ideas may look, that doesn’t mean there isn’t moments throughout the day that are tough. Moments throughout the day, throughout the night and throughout the week that you don’t see because you’re only seeing the idea come to life- not what makes it come to life.

What people don’t talk about when you hear the word entrepreneur is the battle an entrepreneur has to face constantly to create new ideas and be willing to believe in the ideas so deeply to be able sell them to other people. And to get back up when people say no over and over.

To be an entrepreneur and a successful one at that, you can’t give up easily.

Relationships, Summit Talk & More

Life has been a little nuts lately! I hope you are all living fearlessly this beautiful Friday. I took a red-eye flight from LA to CT last night to host a surprise birthday party tonight (shhh….don’t tell!!) and I’ve been traveling a little more than I like to lately. It’s only when you take a red-eye flight that you wake up and you’re like what did I sign myself up for and WHYYY, but I’m so used to flying now I know how to prepare myself. Though red-eyes never get easier…you just get more used to less sleep.

I’ve realized over the past few weeks quickly I’ve grown as a person and in business. I’ve been dealing with some relationship issues that have stemmed me to understand and learn more about myself which is why I came to the conclusion that I feel like I got even more mature in the past weeks. Along with that, I’ve never felt as vulnerable as I am right now in front of and behind the camera. I’m waking up to new emails everyday from those of you ready and pumped up to hear about the next Be Fearless Summit, and I feel disappointed in myself because there are aspects of what I’m pursuing in this new chapter/concept that are out of my control. I’m incredibly Type A (if you couldn’t tell) and the pressure I put on myself to be successful is often times too much for me to handle. But if I love something as much as I love this summit, I’m not ever going to take no for an answer. Even if that means jumping through 3,000 hurdles to get to that yes.

When I first had this idea I thought I could call a few of my successful CEO friends and ask them to show up and present talks. Let me tell you, I was so wrong. I pulled off the first summit and am just as eager as you to get working on the next one, but unfortunately there are people who are making the yes and no decision for me regarding these summits and I can’t personally force any college to take a risk on this summit. This concept is still so new and I’m learning so much about what I want it to be, and that means I have to find the right team of people and the right schools that are willing to take these leaps with me. When it comes down to working with colleges, there are an endless amount of hurdles and people you have to answer to to eventually get the YES to host something like this. I want you to know that I’m working very hard on this and I hope to finally get a few of these final yes’ soon enough. If there’s one thing I want you all to take away from following my journey, it’s that every no eventually becomes a yes. Sometimes you have to prove yourself a little more to get that yes.

On the topic of growth, many of you reach out to me and ask if I ever feel lost. Let me tell you something now that you should remember for the rest of your life: everyone always feels lost. Even when people know what they’re doing, they still feel lost. Because feeling lost doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the ground crying and confused about what to do, it can mean that your career is booming but your relationship may not be. And that will make you feel lost in a separate part of your life.

It may mean that you are very confused about what to pursue for a career yet you have the best girlfriend in the world, so you feel set in one area and yet lost in another.

And that’s totally OK.

I’m so vocal about my life and my ups and downs. I’ve built a career on being my authentic and true self in an attempt to inspire you to be that way too. What comes with that is my fear of sometimes over-sharing or not sharing enough because I feel like I don’t necessarily always want to make myself vulnerable in the public eye. I try and keep certain parts of my relationship and my private life public, but I’m such an open book that I never want to shy away from any topic. Moral of the story, I am just as nervous and anxious about this next chapter in my career but I know that what is meant to be will come to me. I certainly feel unstable in my personal life right now (one word: distance) and so I’m learning to focus all of my energy into my passion: working. Sometimes that’s just what you have to do.

P.S. I came across a company called ParkWhiz which offers short-term and long-term parking options in cities like LA and Boston, and they offered to let me park for free near LAX so that I could valet my car and keep it safe overnight while I’m away this weekend. If you’ve ever been to LA, you know how terrible the traffic is. Getting anywhere is such a pain, and especially getting to the airport in rush hour! Really thrilled I got to try this incredible app out for the first time and that my travel experience was a little less hectic this time around!
