4 Ways To Avoid Jewelry Allergies

6 June 2023

Statistics indicate that nearly 10% of the population experience jewelry allergies. In most cases, they are triggered by metals and materials, nickel being a common culprit. And they can lead to skin rashes and itching. And if left unaddressed, they can cause even more severe reactions and skin conditions. Thankfully, there are effective ways to prevent these, so you can enjoy the jewelry pieces you wear. Here are a few you can consider.

Invest only in hypoallergenic jewelry

In simple terms, hypoallergenic jewelry only means jewelry products that are less likely to cause a reaction. They do not contain harsh or irritating alloys that may trigger allergies. Also, most do not rust, tarnish, or corrode over time. If you know you’re prone to jewelry allergies, only invest in hypoallergenic jewelry. Materials like nickel-free stainless steel, 18k gold, sterling silver, platinum, and titanium are excellent examples of hypoallergenic jewelry.

Also, it’s best to avoid jewelry that contains a mix of metals, so keep this in mind.

Keep your jewelry dry

Bracelets and some necklaces tend to cause itchiness when you wear them without completely drying your skin. They allow bacteria to settle in that moist area and create some odor before the itchiness breaks out.  It’s important to always keep your jewelry and body dry to prevent an allergic reaction or rashing out. And take them off before engaging in any physically intensive activity that will cause you to sweat.

Create a barrier

You may have a favorite piece of jewelry that isn’t hypoallergenic or contains nickel, but you still don’t want to get rid of it. In that case, you can create a barrier between the jewelry and your skin whenever you wear it. Simply apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the metal parts of the jewelry that come into contact with your skin. This protective barrier or coating will prevent direct contact between your skin and the metal. And doing this will reduce the risk of an allergic reaction, so feel free to consider this. The only downside is you may have to reapply this coating over time as the nail polish may wear off. However, this is a small price to pay for preventing uncomfortable skin rashes.

Visit a reputable piercing studio

If you’re thinking about getting some piercings done, only choose studios that offer their services in a clean and professional environment. – not in a bedroom or some street corner. Always inspect these shops to ensure they use only sealed and sterile surgical-grade stainless steel needles. Also, the part of the piercing gun that touches the skin should be properly maintained and not used on more than one customer. And don’t forget to ask your piercer to provide some documentation on the metallic content of the jewelry they use. Otherwise, purchase yours from a reputable seller. For example, if you want to get a piercing done for an eyebrow ring, you can purchase eyebrow rings in several styles from a trusted dealer.
