THE DEBT 💸 JOURNEY part 5! One of the most crucial parts of entrepreneurship is to have a mindset surrounding money that’s not obsessive. As a self-made entrepreneur who didn’t grow up with any money, I’ve struggled with trying to balance getting excited about making money but being realistic about paying off my credit card debt & also taking a salary.

The fall @befearlesssummit in Connecticut is the first investment I’ve gotten into this program from a university which is HUGE. It also means that I’ll get X amount of money upfront to last for 4ish months - how do I decide what to do with the money to make it a worthy investment for the college, but also not have me in a position where no money is left over after planning the conference to put in my savings or pay off my credit cards? Planning ahead 🖊

I’m obsessed with cryptocurrency, so I’ve been taking out some of the money in my IRA account to invest in Bitcoin, Litecoin & Ethereum (@jenikate_6 will be on @thenewunfiltered to talk about her thoughts on crypto) but to do that - I equally have to continue to pay off my credit cards. The unfortunate reality behind entrepreneurship is you’ll never have a steady paycheck. And what does a lack of a steady pay check mean? Occasionally getting out of debt to get back into debt. It happens. That’s when the optimistic and thrill-seeking personality traits have to come out to remind yourself that the ups & downs, and constant fear of not making money will always work out in the end when you achieve your biggest goal. IF you can, plan ahead when you know you’re getting a certain amount of money before it hits your bank account. The best piece of advice I walked away from after having a show on Disney was patience is 🔑

When I initially pitched a ton of producers from a list I found online while I was living in Boston, I had no expectation of what would come of the idea. I landed that show by sending an email I had no expectation I’d get a response from... and look what happened 😎 you’ll never know when that moment will come, so you keep trying new things and pursuing your ideas until it does. #TheNewUnfiltered #FearlessEveryday

HOW TO MAKE GIRL FRIENDS U ACTUALLY LIKE 👏🏻 yesterday I wrote down a list of things I wanted to continue to pursue to make me uncomfortable & one that all of u replied to like crazy on my story was my bullet point about making new girl friends I don’t end up disliking lol.

I don’t yet know the right answer on how to do this because I actually stopped making new girl friends in LA during my 4 years there - I became so sick of conversations relating to nothing authentic, besides with my existing friends who I love! How are you making new friends, especially girls? It sucks that it’s harder to do this now - but your responses showed me that I’m not alone in feeling this way.

Friendships are a bit like mentorship: you have to create this courting period like when you’re newly dating someone that helps you decide whether this person will be there for you through thick and thin. You might not even know the answer on if they will be until something happens you want advice on, so just be open to making new girl friends, going to a bar alone one day a month (it’s scary - do it 🤗) and not being afraid to LET PEOPLE GO who don’t bring value to your life 💯 #TheNewUnfiltered #GetUncomfortable

One question that’s been asked during some talks is how to prove to people you’re worthy of getting hired / being a successful freelancer (etc.) when you’re young. I came up with the term ageism (not sure if that already exists, lol) but either way, how do you overcome being young yet knowing you may be worth pay or an opportunity someone twice your age is going after?

There’s no right / wrong answer to how to overcome this situation. When I started blogging at 12, I used to lie about my age ALL THE TIME... then I’d get myself into situations where I’d sign a contract as if I was of the legal age & that never worked out in my favor 😎 all the age situation comes down to is how much are you willing to fight to prove you’re worthy of something? You may have to go a little above and beyond, send a résumé AND a media kit of your work to the employer instead of just a résumé, or figure out where the owner of the company gets coffee every morning and make that your new spot.

And if someone says no because you’re too “young” or “inexperienced” find someone who says yes. If you believe in yourself and your work, that’s all that matters!!

In December I was frustrated that I wasn't going to hit my goal of hosting a Spring summit. Mentally, I was drained and quite frankly, annoyed that I wasn't able to get the response I was anticipating for the 2021 season, call after call with a new college.

I didn’t anticipate presenting this summit program at a university so stellar like Vanderbilt this early in the game (we have premiered at 2 colleges so far!) but here we are...with a lineup stronger, more inspiring, and more diverse than ever before.

I’ve been waiting to post about the hate that’s occurring in the Asian community until I truly understood how long this hate has been occurring, and quite frankly, why it’s happening. Meet Tina.

My life has a tendency to be quite spontaneous, very odd, and exciting! Back in December, I listed my car on this neighborhood app called Nextdoor because I was heading out of town for the holidays. I’m an entrepreneur and love to make money in any way, duh. Tina contacted me and asked if she could rent my car while she shopped around for another car. I dropped off my car at her house in a town outside of Hollywood. She questioned me on a a range of different things, and we became quick friends even though we have a big age difference. I think she saw a lot of herself in me, having had a successful career working at FedEx & retiring early to live a nice life. After deciding that I was cool 😉 she invited me in for some wine.

Over the last few months, Tina and I have gone to lunch & had a few weekend walks where I ask her about her life & vice versa. Today I took the afternoon off to meet her for some ramen 🍜 in Burbank. She explained to me about the hate she experienced when she was younger (she’s 65 now) along with isolated incidents she’s experienced as an Asian person, and a woman. I truly felt the pain she has endured through her explanation of these unfortunate experiences. We both agreed to continue to stay educated, get involved, and volunteer as often as possible to bring attention to the change that needs to happen to stop this hate everywhere. I encourage all of you to do the same, and equally not feel pressure to respond to anything you see until you understand it.

4 days in Austin so far & I can’t believe I lived without tacos, gelato & coffee this good in LA for 4 years 🌮 first run-through with @digibashvirtualevent for the Vanderbilt @befearlesssummit on May 22nd (schedule + RSVP comes out next week 🎉) and the virtual stage design is pretty sick this year! There’s so much prep to make sure everything works right day of. Sometimes I feel like I’m acting because I say the same sentence 100 times over during these run-throughs. The 🔑 question to ask yourself before you email or DM someone important is how do you want them to view you? You will never be viewed unprofessional by sending an email, so is it worth the possibility by jumping right to a DM? What’s great about DM is you can view it as a follow-up to an email. Finding emails is easy, snov.io & LinkedIn Lead Leaper are amazing!

Think to yourself, what is your end goal by contacting this person? Many people are more interested in conversations via email because the message doesn’t get lost in an “other” folder like it can via DM, and it’s easier to set up a follow-up phone call... & continue the convo!
